The Cassadines are a fictional aristocratic family featured in the American soap opera General Hospital. Various members of the family have been residents of Port Charles and have owned several private island compounds worldwide, including Cassadine Island in Greece.
Background[]
The Cassadine family, descendants of Russian aristocracy and connected to the royal Romanovs, thrived in Russia for centuries. The 1917 Bolshevik Revolution compelled their flight to Greece, where they subsequently established a vast empire of wealth and power.
The Cassadines debuted in 1981 with Mikkos Ivanovich Cassadine, the family patriarch, and his brothers Victor and Tony, engaging in various sinister schemes, including the Ice Princess plot to freeze the world using a weather machine. Their plans were thwarted by Robert Scorpio, Luke Spencer, and Laura Webber, resulting in Mikkos and Tony's deaths during a confrontation, while Victor was apprehended. Subsequently, Mikkos' widow Helena Cassadine arrived in Port Charles to curse Luke and Laura at their wedding, seeking vengeance.
In 1982, the Cassadines kidnapped Laura and coerced her into marrying Helena's son, Stavros Nikolai Mikkosovich Cassadine, having deceived Laura into believing that Luke was dead. While held captive in Greece, Laura bore Stavros' son, Prince Nikolas Mikail Stavrosovich Cassadine. Upon learning that Luke was alive, Laura fled after a year of captivity, leaving Nikolas in Greece to be raised by his uncle, Stefan Darius Mikkosovich Cassadine, Helena's second son. Previously, Stefan and Laura had been romantically involved, and Laura had thought Stefan was Nikolas' father, not Stavros. Stavros pursued Laura back to Port Charles, seeking to reclaim his wife. However, following a confrontation with Luke, Stavros met his demise, seemingly dying after tumbling down a flight of stairs at General Hospital.
Stefan ultimately assumed leadership of the family, and in 1996, he and Nikolas relocated to Port Charles with Alexis Davis. It was later disclosed that Alexis was one of Mikkos' two illegitimate daughters with the Swedish opera singer Kristin Bergman, the other being Kristina Cassadine. Born Natasha Cassadine, Alexis, upon receiving her royal titles, renounced them and legally altered her surname to Davis. Helena, too, returned to Port Charles, fixated on seizing control of Nikolas, the heir to the Cassadine fortune.
In 2001, Helena resurrected her deceased son, Stavros, after a decade in the sub-basement laboratory of GH. His return was brief, as he was believed to have died permanently after Luke pushed him into a bottomless pit. That year, Alexis was elated to find her sister Kristina alive, hidden away by Mikkos from Helena. Alexis and Kristina developed a close relationship, but it was tragically ended a year later when Kristina died in a mob-related incident, devastating Alexis.
In 2003, Luke and Stefan had their final confrontation, ending with Stefan being fatally stabbed at Wyndemere Castle on Spoon Island. With the apparent elimination of all vengeful Cassadines, Nikolas announced the end of the feud between the Spencers and the Cassadines. Years later, Nikolas faced single fatherhood when his fiancée, Courtney Matthews, passed away shortly after delivering their son, whom he named Spencer Cassadine.
In 2013, Helena was fatally shot aboard the Haunted Star by Luke. The shock continued as Luke and Laura discovered Stavros alive, holding Lulu Spencer captive on Cassadine Island. They rescued Lulu and exacted revenge by freezing Stavros in his ice chamber. Within a year, Victor Cassadine returned to Port Charles, having preserved Helena and Stavros' bodies, and revived them. Stavros was quickly killed again, and Victor was also shot dead. Helena survived a little over a year before her health declined, leading to her death on Cassadine Island. Posthumously, her journal disclosed that Nikolas had poisoned her, causing her death.
In 2016, Valentin Mikkosovich Cassadine was found on Cassadine Island, initially thought to be Mikkos' illegitimate son. Before her death, Helena disclosed that Mikkos had disowned Valentin at birth, stripping him of Cassadine privileges. Valentin took Nikolas' family and friends hostage, coercing Nikolas to relinquish his fortune. During a confrontation, Nikolas fell from a balcony, leading to his presumed death. Valentin fled to Port Charles, attempting to abduct and murder his grandnephew Spencer but was apprehended by the authorities. Concerned for Spencer's safety, Laura sent him to boarding school. Post Nikolas' supposed demise, Valentin was freed from prison and settled in Wyndemere. Valentin and Lulu Spencer have a daughter, Charlotte Honor Cassadine, born via IVF, over whom they have joint custody. It was later uncovered that Charlotte was intentionally conceived as Valentin and Lulu's child, not to provide Stavros and Lulu with an offspring, but to produce an heir for Helena with Luke's lineage.
In 2019, Nikolas was revealed to be alive, returning to reclaim his life and disclosing that Valentin is supposedly not a Cassadine. It was later unveiled that Valentin is not Mikkos' son but Helena's, thus negating his claim to the Cassadine fortune. Following Nikolas' exposure of Valentin and confirmation as the rightful heir, Valentin departed from Spoon Island, leaving Nikolas as the sole proprietor once again. Nikolas and Ava Jerome seized this moment to marry at Wyndemere. In 2021, Victor Cassadine was found to be alive and confessed to fathering Valentin with Helena, affirming his blood relation to the family.
In August 2022, Nikolas was revealed to have had a one-night stand with Esme Prince, the then-girlfriend of his son Spencer. When Nikolas' then-wife, Ava Jerome, discovers this, she confronts Esme, leading to a fight that results in Esme falling from the Wyndemere Parapet and being presumed dead. Esme later returns to Wyndemere to inform Nikolas of her pregnancy, claiming he is the father and offering to take a paternity test. Viewing the baby as leverage, she blackmails Nikolas, who then confines her to an abandoned suite in the castle. Esme manages to escape on New Year's Eve 2022 by intentionally falling from the parapet into the ocean. She survives, but with amnesia and is detained at Spring Ridge Prison. On February 15, 2023, the baby is born with assistance from his paternal grandmother, Laura Webber, and his maternal great uncle, Dr. Kevin Collins, along with paramedics. The baby is named Ace Niklosovich Prince-Cassadine.
Davis Girls[]
Alexis, now bearing the Davis surname, has three daughters. As a teenager, she had a one-night stand, resulting in her pregnancy and the birth of her first daughter, Samantha McCall. Samantha's father was later identified as Julian Jerome. Mikkos coerced Alexis into giving Samantha up for adoption immediately after her birth. In 2002, Alexis had another one-night stand with Sonny Corinthos, leading to the birth of their daughter, Kristina Adela Corinthos-Davis, named in memory of her deceased sister.
Sam arrived in Port Charles in 2003, yet she and Alexis remained oblivious to their mother-daughter relationship. Sam's affair with Sonny led to her pregnancy, and she named the baby Lila McCall. When Kristina was diagnosed with leukemia, Alexis learned that Lila's stem cells could save her. Tragically, after Alexis sought Sam's consent for the treatment, Sam prematurely gave birth, and Lila was stillborn. Lila's stem cells saved Kristina, leaving Alexis thankful and Sam heartbroken. In 2005, Alexis wed Sonny's half-brother Ric Lansing and welcomed her third daughter, Molly Lansing-Davis.
It was not until 2006 that Alexis and Sam discovered their familial bond; both initially rejected the relationship. The tension escalated when Alexis caught Ric and Sam together, leading to her divorce from Ric.
Today, Alexis and Sam have forged a strong bond, with Sam being very protective of her younger sisters, Kristina and Molly. In 2012, Sam welcomed her son with her ex-husband Jason Morgan, whom they named Daniel Edward Morgan. In 2017, Sam had her second child, a daughter named Emily Scout Cain, with former Navy SEAL and Jason's identical twin, Drew Cain.
Helena's Will[]
On March 14, 2016, Helena's will was read at Wyndemere Castle with Laura, Nikolas, Lulu, Alexis, Sam, Elizabeth Webber, and Hayden Barnes present, with Scott Baldwin as executor of the will. Helena bequeathed the following via video recording:
- To Sam, she left one cent, to be split equally with her sisters, because "that's all any child of Alexis is worth."
- To Alexis, she left a music box, playing the last song her mother ever sang and inside was the knife Helena used to slit her mother's throat.
- To Elizabeth, she left a handwritten document called "Jake's Adventure," detailing his life when he was held captive by Helena.
- To Nikolas, she left a portrait of herself (later revealed to hold a codicil to Mikkos' will) and informed him that she left everything else to the Cassadine Foundation, because she felt that he betrayed her.
- To Lulu, she left an empty envelope and warned her to remember what she said and not to ignore her gift or she may regret it.
- To Laura, she left a box with a single key and says "You took from me the thing I loved most, my beloved Mikkos. But because I am the better person, I'm giving you the key to what you have loved and lost."
Victor's Will[]
On May 30, 2023, Victor's will was read at the Collins Penthouse with Laura, Spencer, Alexis, and Ava in attendance. Sam, Anna and Valentin were invited but did not attend, while Martin Grey stood proxy for Valentin. He bequeathed the following via video recording:
- To Ava, he left a rendering of her "first true love" - a picture of a gargoyle.
- To Alexis, he left a Matryoshka doll, dating back to the Romanovs. Inside the doll were smaller versions of itself representing each of her daughters.
- To Sam, he left a deck of rare tarot cards, so that she might one day use them to be "lucky in love." (These could be the cards used to condition Drew Cain.)
- To Charlotte, he left a necklace and pendant engraved with the Cassadine family crest, to remind her of who she is and who she will "one day become."
- To Valentin, whom he called the "rotten apple of my eye," he left "a rare piece of antiquity," the severed middle finger from a statue of the sun god Apollo.
- To Spencer, he returned the box of two turtle dove figurines and spoke of safeguarding his family; a key was hidden underneath.
- To Nikolas, the deed to a "home away from home" located in Chechnya. Entrusted to Spencer while his father is MIA.
- To Anna, the truth exposed from her secrets - it is unknown what truth and based on what secrets, but it led to her very public arrest by the WSB.
- To Laura, his worthy adversary, the knowledge that she beat him and can live in peace.
Cassadine Industries[]
Cassadine Industries is a major international conglomerate, established by the Cassadine family in the late 1970s initially as a facade for illicit activities. However, the enterprise flourished under the leadership of Mikkos, Stavros, Helena, Valentin, and Nikolas, among others. In December 2005, an individual Cassadine Industries account was valued at approximately $15 million. By May 2009, the conglomerate's worth had soared to over $20 billion.
In November 2016, Valentin Cassadine assumed the role of CEO at Cassadine Industries after a hidden will from Mikkos disclosed that he bequeathed the entire Cassadine Estate to his eldest living son. With the deaths of Stavros and Stefan, Valentin was presumed to be the sole surviving son, thus nullifying any inheritance claims from Nikolas and Spencer, and establishing himself as the primary heir to the Cassadine Empire, with his daughter Charlotte set to succeed him. However, in August 2019, a codicil to Mikkos' will surfaced, proving Valentin to be Helena's son, not Mikkos', which led Nikolas to declare that he and Spencer were the rightful heirs.
On September 15, 2023, at The Invader, Alexis and Spencer reviewed the legal codicil for CI. With the Cassadine estate poised to transfer to him six months after Nikolas' departure, Spencer found himself puzzled by the legal jargon in the document he received. Alexis agreed to examine the document, acknowledging its complexity and the need for time to decipher it. Spencer expressed his gratitude for her assistance and the support of family in this matter.
