General Hospital: Night Shift stylized as NIGHTSHIFT, is an American prime time serial that first aired on Soapnet for a 27-episode run from July 12, 2007, to October 21, 2008. A spin-off of the ABC Daytime soap opera General Hospital, the show is SOAPnet's first original scripted drama series and follows the nighttime adventures of familiar and new characters around the hospital. As of March 2008, the first season of the series was "SOAPnet's most watched series ever.

Background[]

The first season of Night Shift aired from July 12, 2007, to October 4, 2007, followed by a second season from July 22, 2008, to October 21, 2008. SOAPnet announced before the premiere that Night Shift would explore the deeper aspects of relationships, friendships, and medical cases at the hospital. The show's storylines were designed to be self-contained, concluding within each one-hour episode, making it accessible to those who do not follow General Hospital. Aimed at drawing a younger audience to SOAPnet and General Hospital, Night Shift featured characters from General Hospital's past, primarily younger ones connected to the core families. Following the conclusion of the first season on October 4, 2007, the plotlines from Night Shift transitioned to General Hospital beginning October 5, 2007.

In May 2008, it was announced that Lisa de Cazotte would take on the role of Executive Producer for the second season, with Sri Rao joining as Head Writer. The 14 new episodes of Night Shift, taped in high-definition, began airing on Tuesdays at 11 p.m., premiering July 22, 2008. SOAPnet stated that the second season "will feature both new and returning characters, as well as the return of 'legacy' characters from GH, ensuring continuity between storylines on Night Shift and GH." The season concluded on October 21, 2008.
