Before joining General Hospital, Burton had a supporting role on the syndicated sitcom Out of This World during its four season run from 1987 to 1991 where he played the character of Chris Fuller. Burton then went on to join the General Hospital cast in 1991 where he played Jason Quartermaine and later the revamped role of Jason Morgan. He stayed with the soap from 1991 to 2000 and then left to pursue other goals. Burton returned to the role of Jason in 2002 and stayed until 2012. In 1998, Burton won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, for his role as Jason. Burton also appeared in the first season of the General Hospital spin-off General Hospital: Night Shift in 2007.
Burton also appeared in the science fiction miniseries Taken and in the movie The Last Castle in 2001 with Robert Redford and James Gandolfini. He is also the voice actor of Cloud Strife in the Kingdom Hearts series and the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. He has voiced Cloud in the game Kingdom Hearts and its sequel, Kingdom Hearts II, as well as in the CGI movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and the video games Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Dissidia Final Fantasy and Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy.
In 2005, Burton wrote and directed a film called Laws of Gambling. Burton is also currently a singer in the Port Chuck band, that he formed with fellow General Hospital castmates Brandon Barash, Scott Reeves and Bradford Anderson.
After leaving GH in October 2012, Steve Burton appeared on CBS' The Young and the Restless as Dylan McAvoy in late January. The gap between leaving GH and joing Y&R was only three-months, who is reportedly now living in Nashville. He is signed to a short-term contract with a more flexible work schedule, however he's still appearing as Dylan McAvoy (as of September 2013). (TV Guide Interview) 
Steve Burton was born on June 28, 1970 to Jack and Tory Burton in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was raised in Cleveland, Ohio before moving to Hollywood. He graduated from Beverly Hills High School in Beverly Hills, California.
Burton has been married to Sheree Gustin since 1999 and together the couple have two children, Makena and Jack. He confirmed via Twitter on January 19, 2014, that he and his wife are expecting their third child, a girl, due in mid-July. On July 7, Steve tweeted that his wife had given birth to their second daughter, Brooklyn Faith Burton.
