The storyline came about after Steve Burton returned to the role of Jason Morgan in 2017, reclaiming the role from Billy Miller, who was originally hired as a Jason Morgan recast in 2014. Upon Burton's return, Miller's character was retconned into Jason's formerly unknown identical twin brother.

The Quartermaine Twins; Left: Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) Right: Andrew Cain (Billy Miller)

In 2012, Cesar Faison discovered Jason Morgan had a twin brother named Chief Andrew Cain, when he happened to come across some sensitive Navy SEAL information. In July 2012, Faison is able to mastermind the kidnapping of Drew from the Navy SEALS with the assistance of Helena Cassadine who was also revealed as one of the masterminds behind the conspiracy. Helena and Faison's son, Henrik Faison enlist Hank Archer, who was serving as an independent contractor with Drew in the SEALS, to ambush, kidnap and deliver Drew to her. While under the guise of Duke Lavery, Faison shoots Jason and kicks him into the harbor in October 2012.

While offscreen, Jason was pulled out of the harbor and kidnapped on a boat nearby. Once both twins were in custody, Faison hired Dr. Andre Maddox to memory-map Drew's mind with Jason's memories. Their plan was to brainwash Drew into believing he was Jason then send him back to Port Charles as a sleeper agent who would be programmed to commit hits with no memory of the crime. Faison revealed he chose Drew because the brainwashing technique wouldn't work on Jason with his prior brain damage. After the conditioning of Drew, Faison ordered his son Henrik to eliminate Jason. But Henrik had other plans, knowing Jason would one day pursue and kill Faison for what he had done, Henrik had Jason secretly kept alive at the Boronsky Clinic in Russia. There, he was put under the supervision of Dr. Richard Klein and became known as Patient 6.

Drew was handed off to Victor Cassadine and kept in cryogenic suspension in the Crichton-Clark Clinic. He was then revived by Robin Scorpio-Drake who believed Drew was Jason. The memory-mapping was a success and when Drew awoke in 2014, he indeed believed he was Jason Morgan. He attempted to help Robin escape capitivity from the Cassadines, but both were recaptured. Desperate to escape, Drew jumped out of the vehicle and was then hit and runover by a car driven by Ava Jerome. When he arrived for emergency surgery at General Hospital no I.D. could be found in the system, as the Cassadines had erased Drew's identity. He required multiple extensive surgeries, getting a new face in the process. When he awoke he suffered from amnesia and called himself Jake Doe for over a year until a DNA test came back to a match for Jason Morgan. Drew eventually regained Jason's implanted memories and the whole town believed he was Jason Morgan with a new face for almost four years.

In 2017, Jason finally managed to escape captivity with the unexpected help of Ava Jerome who was visiting the clinic in Russia. When Jason returned to Port Charles he was shocked to find not only had five years past, but also that someone else was living his life and calling themself Jason Morgan! The truth came to light when Andre Maddox revealed his role in the conspiracy and confirmed that Drew was the twin brother of Jason, while Patient 6 was indeed the real Jason Morgan. Andre also revealed Drew's original memories were kept on a flashdrive, however if he chose to restore it, his life as Jason for the last four years would be erased. After Drew's son died, whom he had only had only known a short time, he chose not to use the flashdrive. Ultimately he began to move forward with a new life for himself as Drew Cain keeping Jason's memories.

On August 9, 2019, Hank Archer orders Dr. Arthur Cabot to perform the memory-mapping procedure on Franco Baldwin. This time with Drew's memories that were stored on the flash drive. As a result, Franco woke up believing he was Drew Cain. Franco as "Drew" then demands to start a new life for himself in Franco's body. However he's eventually convinced to undo the procedure four months later and Franco was back to normal.

As of 2022, it seems some if not all of Drew's memory has returned to him on his own, as he's begun mentioning his previous life as a Navy SEAL and at high school.

Patients of Memory Transference:[]

In 2019, it's revealed that there are other patients who suffered from the same process at one time or another. The names of the patients are listed below.

  • 1. Special Agent Anna Devane
  • 2. Dr. Alex Devane
  • 3. Dr. Kevin Collins
  • 4. Dr. Ryan Chamberlain
  • 5. Chief Drew Cain
  • 6. Jason Morgan
  • 7. Franco Baldwin

    Storylines[]

In July 2012, a Navy SEAL named Chief Andrew Cain (Steve Burton) was ambushed and kidnapped by his "buddy" Hank Archer under orders of Helena Cassadine. Andrew was presumed to have gone AWOL even though he was actually kidnapped.

In October 2012, Jason Morgan (also Steve Burton) was shot in the back by Cesar Faison, and kicked into the water. His body was never recovered and Jason was presumed dead.

In January 2014, Victor Cassadine approached Robin Scorpio with a proposal to revive the deceased Helena Cassadine and her son, Stavros. He also claimed that she would be helping to revive her long time friend Jason Morgan. In August 2014, Robin finally revived Drew who was believed to be Jason, and Victor planned to use his skills as an assassin.

In September 2014, Robin and "Jason" escaped the clinic together, but soon got separated. "Jason" was hit by a car and his face was damaged beyond recognition. Having no ID on him, "Jason" was given reconstructive surgery with a completely new face: (Billy Miller). He also had amnesia and went by Jake Doe for over a year with only Nikolas Cassadine, Elizabeth Webber, Hayden Barnes, Laura Spencer and later, Lucky Spencer knowing the truth.

On December 5, it was revealed "Jason" was conditioned by Faison to do his and Helena's bidding, which was activated using the phrase "You're active" and the microchip that Helena had implanted in "Jason's" head.

On February 19, 2015, "Jason" had surgery to have the microchip removed.

In November, Jake Doe's real identity was uncovered by Carly Corinthos, and a DNA test proved he was Jason Morgan. A facial reconstruction program, developed by Spinelli also showed that Jake Doe before the accident and reconstructive surgery had Jason Morgan's original face.

In September 2017, Ava Jerome traveled to the Boronsky Clinic in Russia for plastic surgery after making a deal with Valentin Cassadine. At the clinic, Ava saw a mysterious hooded man in a wheelchair with a mask over his mouth. She was warned to stay away from the man, but felt drawn to him and would often communicate with him. For a split second, she hoped the man was the presumed deceased Nikolas Cassadine. The man was soon revealed to have Jason Morgan's original face and memories.

In October, Ava helped the man, known as Patient 6 (Steve Burton) escape from the Boronsky Clinic at almost the cost of her own life. Patient 6 got in contact with a Russian priest, who helped him arrange transport back to Port Charles. On the way there, Patient 6 saw a newspaper that told him he had missed five years of his life.

The Anamnesis Project: The Effects of Memory Rewriting by Dr. Andre Maddox

On November 1, Andre revealed to Franco that he used to work for the WSB and invented a software to use computers in memory mapping to overlay one persons memories with another. Andre told Franco that the WSB shut it down before he could test it. So he sold it and then was presented with a test subject a few years ago...a man who had been shot and rescued from the Port Charles water. He didn't know who he was, only that he had an identical twin, which would increase the odds of success. He told Franco that both twins truly believe that they are Jason Morgan and neither one know who truly is. As there is no way to reverse the mapping Drew will continue thinking he's Jason Morgan.

In early 2018, Jason Morgan fatally shot Cesar Faison, who was left to die by his own son Henrik as he was gasping for air.

Despite Drew's conditioning, if he comes across something or someone from his past, it would feel familiar to him. For example, when he met Dr. Kim Nero, he felt he knew her from his past which was later confirmed to be true. In addition, when Drew incidentally saw a rabbit's foot key chain that Franco is carrying around with him, in February 2018, it seemed familiar to him. Later he learns that he gave it to Franco on Christmas back when they were toddlers. This could mean that Drew's memories are buried underneath the Jason memories and are not gone.

On May 22, Henrik was captured and taken into custody by the PCPD and the WSB. However in early August, he was released under watch by the WSB.

On July 24, PC's current DA Margaux Dawson found the missing drive containing all of Drew's memories and is for some unknown reason reluctant to give it to Drew. On October 11, Drew learned that Margaux has the missing drive and she offers to give it to him in exchange for his help in taking down Sonny.

    DrewMemory1

Drew finally with his memory drive

On October 17, it's revealed that if Drew gets his original memories and removes all of Jason's, all the memories of his time in Port Charles since 2014 would be erased completely, he wouldn't be able to remember all the people he met during that time not even his own children. On December 10, Margaux gives Drew his memory drive after making peace with Sonny. However, Drew is resolute on not getting his memories back as he'll lose all the memories of the past 6 years; particularly of having his daughter and meeting his son.

On February 22, 2019, Jason and Drew were struck with the HN-242 virus that made them suddenly go blind at the same time just like Anna, Alex, Kevin, and Ryan did before but on February 25, Dr. Hamilton Finn restored their sight.

On August 21, it was revealed that Henrik (now known as Peter August) was responsible for Drew's abduction in July 2012 since he was working with Helena Cassadine. Peter was much more involved in the conspiracy than he originally said since he was there from the beginning. In order to cover up his involvement, he ordered Drew's plane to go down in order to prevent him from finding Andre and he tried to have Hank Archer killed since he knew about Peter's involvement and was blackmailing him. After Hank was killed by Sam McCall in defense of Jason, he framed Sam for hiring Bryce Henderson to help Hank escape so she could take him out.

In December, when Franco Baldwin was stuck with Drew's memories, he decided to undergo the memory reversal procedure and Andre was willing to help. Peter hired David Black to kill Andre and Franco to eliminate the risk of Drew's memories intensifying in Franco's head but he had a change of heart and shot David instead. On December 17, the procedure worked and Franco was back to normal.

On March 6, 2020, Peter framed Liesl Obrecht for Drew's presumed death (Bryce crashed Drew's plane) and for the murder attempts on Andre and Franco in order to throw everyone off his trail since he was getting close to being exposed. Liesl was arrested by the WSB and was wrongfully extradited to The Hague.

In October, Peter hired Dante Falconeri (who recently returned to Port Charles after having been gone since March 2019 to be treated for his severe PTSD) as Head of Security for The Invader. Unbeknownst to Peter, Dante was actually brainwashed into completing a mission to take Peter down. On November 19, Dante turned the evidence over to the WSB which was enough to exonerate Liesl but not enough to prove Peter's guilt.

    Specimens (2020)

On October 26, 2020, Kevin is shown in the GH research lab trying to restore memories for Subject #3 for the Anamnesis Project (himself). There were at least 10 specimens shown.

On February 8, 2021, Peter finally revealed his crimes to Valentin and asked him not to tell anyone. Valentin agreed to do his best to minimize the damage and he later told Anna everything.

On March 3, Peter learned that Anna was not his mother after all and that his real mother is Anna's twin sister, Dr. Alex Devane. On March 4, Peter's crimes were finally exposed by Valentin but he wasn't arrested Peter had covered his tracks and left no proof.

On August 16, Drew was revealed to be alive and currently being held in a foreign prison. Peter and an alive Victor Cassadine were behind his kidnapping.

On October 5, it is revealed that Drew was conditioned by Peter to do his bidding which will activate after displaying "The Tower" tarot card and using the phrase "You're active". Also it was revealed that Shiloh worked with Dallas Kirby to fake Drew's plane crash.
